Coiba National Park is a park located in the districts of Montijo and Sona in Panama’s Veraguas province and is about 25 minute on a charter flight from Panama City or 4 hours journey by road from the capital city. Its surface: 270.125 ha, of which 216.543 are marine.

The largest of these volcanic islands is the Island of Coiba, which 50.314 ha is the largest island in the Central Pacific. Besides it are many islands such as Jicarón (2,002 ha), Jicarita (125 ha), Canal de Afuera (240 ha), Afuerita (27 ha), Birds (45 ha), Uva (257 ha), Brincanco (330 ha), Coibita (242 ha) … and many more form the 53, 582 ha of island territories.

On the whole park the islands have more than 240 km of coastline which is mostly preserved in its natural state. Paradoxically, the conservation of this archipelago is basically because from 1919 to 2004 Coiba Island was used as a penal colony by the Panamanian government.

Coiba Island has several endemic species, over 80% of the island is covered by original vegetation such as mangroves and catival of significant magnitude, the island has at least 3 species of sea turtles which come to spawn, has some of the best coral reefs the Panamanian Pacific and provided an undeniable value to the tourism landscape, sustainable management of these natural resources to prevent degradation.

The average annual temperature is about 26 º C (79 F) and average annual rainfall is around 3,500 mm.

Coastal plains with elevations below one hundred meters predominate in north and southeast of Coiba Island, while the remaining low-elevation hills which barely exceed 200 m are the dominant landscape. Only in the central sector is a ridge where the highest points are located: the hill of the tower with 416 meters and the Cerro de San Juan with 406 meters.

In Coiba numerous rivers exist such as el Negro, 20 km long and eight tributaries, the San Juan, with 18.5 km long and the Santa Clara, with 17 km in length.

Primary forests are predominant in Coiba but forests are also interved as a result of the camps in the penal colony and the logging of old times.

1.450 vascular plant species have been recorded with the presence of abundant specimens of kapok (Ceiba pentandra), Panama (Sterculia apetala), espavé (Anacardium excelsum), tangaré (Carapa guianensis) and cedar hawthorn (Bombacopsis quinatum).

To date 69 species of marine fish, 12 echinoderms, 45 molluscs and 13 crustaceans have been identified in the protected area.

The seas of Coiba are traditionally known for its abundant fishing, harboring species like the whale sharks (Rhincodon typus), the tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier), manta ray (Manta birostris), dolphinfish (Coriphaena hippurus) and yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacahes).

To visit the Island of Coiba is necessary to go to Santiago (2 1/2 hours from Panama City in car) and from there to the port of Montijo. There are several options for transport including bus, private charter or rental car.

Transfer of luggage to the hotel in Isla Cébaco, and immediately continue to Isla Canales de Afuera, Coibita, Coiba National Park (Hall of Pictures) and Isla Granito de Oro (snorkeling, sandwiches, drinks).
