What Kind of Salt Water Fish Can I Catch in Panama?

The quick answer is, “almost any kind and size you want.”

The name Panama actually means “abundance of fish.” Panama’s coastal waters and interior are famous for their size and variety of fish. Considering that nearly fifty world records for various fish species were set in Panama over the years this is where you want to come to fish for trophy fish.

What makes the ocean fishing great in Panama is the number of islands and surrounding coral reefs providing intact ecosystems in warm water where the fish feed well and grow rapidly. Panama’s Caribbean and Pacific coastlines total nearly one thousand miles but that does not take into account the circumference of each island. That is a lot of fishing territory.

The list of what you can catch in Panama reads like a “who’s who” of sport fishing: tuna, barracuda, amber jack, dolphin fish, marlin, grouper, snapper, tarpon, Spanish mackeral, and wahoo are part of a partial list. You can catch trophy fish in any category. We are talking about fish as long as person is tall!
